One of the most distinctive aspects of the 2026 Women in Defence UK Summit was the decision to place emerging professionals at the centre of the conversation. Rather than simply discussing the future workforce, delegates heard directly from it.
Representing the Armed Forces, Defence industry, graduate schemes, apprenticeships and early-career programmes, members of the Junior Working Group presented a collective reflection on what it means to begin a career in Defence today. Their presentations were grounded in lived experience, but together they painted a wider picture of an industry undergoing significant cultural change.
Although each speaker approached the discussion from a different perspective, several common themes emerged repeatedly: transparency, belonging, confidence, representation, leadership and allyship.
Collectively, the session demonstrated that attracting talented women into Defence is only the first step. Long-term success depends upon creating organisations where people feel welcomed, supported and able to build fulfilling careers.
