Meet the judge

Surgeon Lieutenant Commander Claire English 

Surgeon Lieutenant Commander (Dental) Claire English BSc BDS MFDS (RCS Eng) PGCMHE PGCDML Royal Navy

Claire graduated as a Dental Surgeon and joined the Royal Navy in August 2016. In her career to date she has held posts at HMS DRAKE, HMS HERON, (RNAS YEOVILTON), Royal Marines Condor, London Central Dental Centre, HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH and HMS SULTAN Dental Centres, as well as undertaking the (non-dental) role of Staff Officer to Captain of the Base (Portsmouth). She has also deployed regularly throughout her career on a range of sea- and land-based operations and exercises, and deployed on OP RESCRIPT setting up mass vaccination centres during the Covid-19 pandemic.

She is a qualified Diversity and Inclusion Practitioner and a Diversity and Inclusion Adviser and has been part of the Naval Servicewomen’s Network’s Executive Committee since 2020. Claire has a passion for teaching, learning and coaching and has completed Postgraduation Certificates in Medical and Health Education and in Defence Medical Leadership.

In her spare time Claire is a keen netballer. She has represented the Royal Navy since 2018, initially as a player but more recently as the Executive Assistant to the President and Chair of the Royal Navy Netball Association. In this role she organises all aspects of Representative Netball – from training and fixtures to Inter-Services Championships and Overseas Visits. She lives in Southsea with her partner and they enjoy travelling the world together.
