It is no secret that the defence sector is a male dominated environment where most roles are held by men. This has become problematic at every level. What do we plan to do about it? Well, that’s what the Critical Mass Community is all about.

The Women in Defence Charter has an ambition of 30% of all roles to be filled by women by 2030. To support that and our purpose of ‘accelerating gender equity’, we asked our Partners what they saw as the biggest challenge; their answer was ‘attracting and retaining women’.

So now that we have identified the problem, what next?

We could all sit down and have a good moan and whinge about the problem (all professionally done of course) but what will we gain from that?

The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude about the problem

We are faced with two choices; to accept the status quo or to reject it and do something about it. We choose to take the advice of Jim Rohn:

Focus on the solution, not the problem.

After being energised by the successful Critical Mass Summit where we explored attraction to the sector as a solution to changing the face of defence; we are delighted to announce the Critical Mass Community. This is a group of EDI and HR practitioners together with advocates of gender equity from our Partner organisations which span the whole defence enterprise. We aim to jointly identify challenges that organisations have in common in the gender equity space; share ideas and find solutions to these challenges. This critical mass of knowledge will really help us to move the dial towards attracting and retaining that elusive critical mass of women.
